In 1941, Joe Whelan decided to start his own business and ran it
from his home on Earl Garrett Street. By 1942 the US was at war and
materials were frozen for the war effort. The business closed for
the duration of the war effort and the oldest plumbing company
remained open for repairs only. Joe, along with other plumbers in
town went to work in San Antonio on the military installations. In
1943, the business was reopened on Earl Garrett.
In the fall of 1947, the company had outgrown the small garage on
Earl Garrett and moved to the Stiefel Building on Water Street where
it remained for little more than a year.
In 1949, the building at 843 Sidney Baker was purchased and it
remained there for 34 years. In 1983, the current location at 2104
Memorial Blvd. was completed and opened for business. The main
building has been recently updated and enlarged to encompass 12,500
sq. feet. All structures at the location total a combined area of
23,500 sq feet which houses offices, showroom, warehouse and work
space.
